Africa

Africa expands over a length of 8.000 kilometres from north to south and over a length of 7.400 kilometres from the outer west to the east. The whole continent has a total area of 30.2 million square kilometres and can be roughly divided into three main landscape areas: savannah, tropical rainforest and desert.

The African grassland is the savannah, with little vegetation and single trees or bushes, it covers about one third of the entire African continent. The tropical rainforest expands from the west coast to the edge of the East-African trench.

The biggest desert of our planet, the Sahara is found in the north of Africa. With a total area of about 9 million square kilometres it almost reaches the size of the United States. The Kalahari, a semi-desert with an area of 260.000 square kilometres, is located in the south of the continent.
