EAZA Rainforest Campaign 2001/2002
Save the “lions” of the rainforest

In 2002, the EAZA executed a campaign to protect the rainforests at the south coast of South America. These rainforests are widely destroyed and only existed in small fragments at that time. The main victims of this habitat destruction are the lion tamarins. The goal of this campaign was to inform zoo visitor about the problems of the south-American rainforests. Through this information, visitors should also get an understanding for the problems of local nature protection organizations in South America. Money for the “Lion Tamarins of Brazil Fund” (LTBF), a local organization trying to protect the lion tamarins, was collected by the participating zoos. The collected money was then used by the Austrian organizations to plant 200.000 m˛ of tree corridors between the remaining parts of the rainforest. To do this, 7.000 € were necessary. Generous visitors all over Austria donated twice as much. Today, the LTBF has already started planting the corridors; two separate rainforest parts can be re-united by doing this. This campaign is a great contribution to the protection of lion tamarins, but is not only helping this special monkey species, but also many other endangered animal species living in the rainforest of the south-American Atlantic coast.
