Turtles are a well armoured but still a heavily endangered species.
Turtles are described as wise, patient and friendly in mythology. They are a symbol for long life but these armoured animals are endangered:
More than half of the species are threatened and close to extinction. In the interest of these animals, the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) has brought up an image- and information campaign. The Salzburg Zoo actively participates in this important campaign.
Turtles are endangered almost everywhere and close to extinction through the destruction of their natural habitats and through poaching. The Shellshock campaign wants to strengthen the public awareness to recognize the irreplaceable values of nature. Information and Education are crucial tasks of the Salzburg Zoo. Together with the educational division of the zoo in Vienna, the Austrian Zoo Association (OZO) initiated a poster exhibition which can also be seen at Salzburg Zoo, at the European land turtle enclosures.
