Our highly endangered housemates

Three new animal species are finding a new home in the Eurasia section of Salzburg Zoo: replacing the dwarf goats, Asian small-clawed otter, visayan warty pig and celebes crested macaque will now share the enclosure as a community of animals. There is a great deal to say about these little otters, clever macaques and rare wild boars. Curious visitors will have the chance to learn more about these endangered species from South-East Asia on 11 July 2026 from 10.00am.

Both the Visayan warty pig and the crested macaque are listed as „Critically Endangered“ on the Red List. Their populations are declining significantly due to habitat loss and poaching. Tragically, the crested macaque is one of the most critically endangered primates in the world. The meat of the Visayan warty pig is considered a delicacy in the Philippines and is therefore heavily hunted. And although the Asian small-clawed otter is only classified as „Endangered“, this otter species is affected by food shortages in many areas, which can be attributed to overfishing and water pollution. This makes it all the more important to campaign for the protection of these three special animals.

10am – Zoo guides lead interactive learning sessions at the new South-East Asia House

• All the information on the three new species
• An explanation of the role and workings of the IUCN Red List
• A deep dive into pecies conservation projects in the natural habitats of the three new species
• Colouring sheets for creative minds
• Fun puzzles for the curious

2pm – End
