Zookids

The children's programme is conducted exclusively in German.

A ‘cool’ opportunity for young zoo fans

Zookids is a children's programme that takes place several times a year on Saturday mornings. Accompanied by a zoo guide, children embark on a journey of discovery through the animal world at Salzburg Zoo – each time with a different focus, great highlights and creative craft ideas to take home.

Zookids is offered in two age groups: Zookids Mini for ages 4 to 6 and Zookids Junior for ages 7 to 10. Zookids Mini gives young participants a playful and gentle insight into the colourful world of animals. Zookids Junior delves deeper into the subject during its expedition. Amazing observations are made and, along the way, fantastic things are learned about the zoo's animal inhabitants. Children's eyes are sure to light up.

Zookids Mini Dates 2026

from 10am to 12pm each day

Dive in and marvel: explore the aquatic habitat
Together we dive into the underwater world. Fish and rays await us, but the playful otter is not left out either. We learn how the highland char returned to its homeland and why the jaguar is not afraid of water.

From helpless to sure-footed: how baby animals grow up
A newborn big cat cub hides in its nest for several weeks, while an alpaca follows its mother around just a few hours after birth. Nature has created different family structures, which we explore with the Zookids, investigating why the incubation temperature is important for the development of male and female turtles.

Zookids Junior Dates 2026

from 9.45am to 12.15pm each day

From helpless to sure-footed: how baby animals grow up
Baby animals start life in very different ways, depending on whether they are predators or prey. Young predators such as big cats are usually born blind and helpless and spend their first weeks well hidden in a safe nest, protected by their mother. Flight animals, on the other hand, such as alpacas, are surprisingly mobile shortly after birth so that they can follow the herd and flee from danger. These different strategies reflect their respective lifestyles and protective mechanisms. Together with the Zookids, we also discover why the incubation temperature determines whether male or female turtles develop.

A hairy business: selected mammals at Salzburg Zoo
Mammals are as diverse as their habitats – from the mighty polar wolf to reindeer, from tiny mice to nimble rats. Together with the Zookids, we discover the typical characteristics of this fascinating group of animals, one by one. This makes it clear what all mammals have in common and how different they nevertheless look and live. Their fur, offspring and way of life impressively demonstrate how adaptable and diverse the mammals at Salzburg Zoo are.
